How to prevent
a dog attack whilst running |
Remember.
Body Language is everything. |
Be CONFIDENT |
Bad Ideas: This will be regared as weakness and the dog may attack
Running away.
Speak to the dog
Wave your arms
Holding your arms to your chest in a fearful manner
Yelling
Showing fear.
Good Ideas: A positive, relaxed state of mind is a very powerful deterrent
Be the strong silent type
Stand proud. Head high and shoulders back
Ignore the dog
Remain calm and quiet.
Avoid eye contact "stare downs" are the most threatening of gestures.
Stop and stand sideward to the dog, hands on hips, shoulders back, head held high.
Keep your movements slow and strong "Standoffs" could last seconds or minutes
Cross the road if you see ahead. A dog "protecting his territory" is less likely to charge.
What Happens Next?
At some point, the dog will either walk away or he may come closer for a sniff and you'll be remembered as a friend
If you are uncomfortable with sniffing, back away slowly and deliberately
The dog will get the message that you do not want to be messed with and that you are not a threat.
